Overview

We have many unique holidays and a very popular one is our Cape Verde Walking Holiday on Fogo in 8 days.

A week full of experiences and contrasts which starts when you approach Fogo from the air. Majestic Pico Grande towers over everything (even your plane when you approach the island), and on a clear day can also be seen from distant Santiago. Climb up the steep ridge to the top of this active volcano, with amazing views of the crater and the lava fields below.

Then run down the scree and ash slopes, back to your casa which was built on the hot lava floor after the most recent eruption in 2014. Wander through the cobbled streets of colourful of São Filipe and Mosteiros, and relax with a glass of local Fogo wine whilst watching the sun go down over the neighbouring island of Brava.

Itinerary

Depart Heathrow and fly via Lisbon to Santiago in Cape Verde. On arrival transfer to the Hotel Oasis Praia Mar where you stay for one night.
Fly to Fogo and on arrival transfer to the Colonial Guesthouse in Sao Filipe where you will stay for one night. In the afternoon you could explore the pretty town with its pastel coloured houses and Sobrados buildings (architecture from the Portuguese colonial era), along cobbled roads.
Meet your guide at the reception. First you'll transfer to the impressive caldera and the starting point of today's hike. During this walk along the Bordeira (crater rim), you have the possibility to catch an impressive view of the volcano and the traces of the eruption of 2014. The higher you get, the more fascinating is the scenic panorama. It's important to be sure-footed, as you have to pass some slippery lava-fields. During the descend, you have a beautiful view over the south of Fogo Island and the Atlantic ocean. Lunch is included. Overnight at Casa Marisa for two nights.
You will have an early start this morning as you'll climb to the volcano summit whilst the air is cool! From Casa Marisa it's a 10 minute warm-up walk to the start of the climb proper. The hike is challenging and walking poles are recommend - gaiters too, to keep stones from getting in your footwear! It can be cold early in the morning, so don't forget to bring a hat, gloves and a windproof jacket. This unforgettable walk will take around 4 to 6 hours. Lunch included and you can explore the caldera at your own pace this afternoon.
After breakfast, you will be picked up again by your guide. Exiting the crater, you have a full day tour of the rest of the island. You will visit Cova Figueira, Mosteiros and Salinas before you head back again to Sao Filipe. Lunch is included today.
Fly back to Santiago where on arrival you will be picked up by your English speaking guide for a tour Praia city. This sprawling city - where over a quarter of all of Cape Verde's population lives - has the most urban-metropolis feel of anywhere in these islands. You start at the main square on the Plateau and walk among some imposing buildings like the Catholic cathedral, the Presidential palace and the statue of Diogo Gomes which overlooks the sea. Try not to lose sight of your guide when you're walking through colourful and bustling Sukopira market, a place full of merchandise and curiosities. Return to the Hotel Oasis Atlantico Praiamar where you will stay for two nights. The rest of the day is free for you to explore at your own pace.
This morning you will be picked up by your guide and driven Calabaciera where you start you walk to Cidade Velha. Hike through the fertile ribeiras and sugar cane fields to Cidade Velha in around three hours, where you also have your lunch. Your guide will then take you on a historical stroll to Rua Banana, the Nossa Senhora do Rosario church and the Pelourinho (pillory). You may also wish to visit the fort which overlooks the bay. Return to your hotel and have the rest of the day free.
Free day until it's time for your transfer to the airport for your flights home via Lisbon.
