Overview

Cape Verde has the third-largest population of nesting loggerhead turtles in the world, which makes it perfect for turtle watching.

Most nest on the islands of Boavista and Sal between July and October, and August is the main month for observations.

On both islands, there are several small turtle conservation projects aimed at protecting the turtle population and their traditional nesting sites. Join a ranger on a night walk as they collect data and tag turtles. At the end of the walk, you can pay to adopt one of the turtles and any money given goes directly to the conservation project.

It is possible to pay and visit the hatcheries on both Sal and Boavista, which in turn helps support the various conservation projects on the islands.
