Overview

Dolphin and whale watching in Cape Verde is usually a bonus as part of a half day sailing or catamaran trip.

Although dolphins are more common and can be seen all year round swimming alongside your boat, March and April are the peak of the breeding season for humpback whales.

The best islands for whale and dolphin watching are Sal and Boavista, with Boavista having the largest number of sightings. The main species of whales seen around the islands are humpback whales, though others like pilot and sperm whales are also seen occasionally.

Whale watching trips average 2 to 3 hours and, weather depending, depart in the mornings and afternoons. Most sightings are off the west and southwest coast of Boavista and at times in peak season it is possible to see them from the shore.
